Soldering & Circuit Diagrams
On September 15, 2013, the Hacker Scouts of South Orange County met for the first of the Skill-Builder series. Mr. Joe, our local soldering expert, started the meeting by reviewing safety instructions then showing everyone how to properly use and care for their soldering irons. Members eagerly unpacked their newly ordered soldering stations, helping hands, and solder practice kits (Elenco Model SP-1A). They began practicing soldering to the pads on the edge of the PC board. Then, they diligently followed the instruction manual, soldering the battery snap, LEDs, resistors, and other components. This also required learning to read circuit diagrams and the resistor color band coding. At the end of 2 hours, most seemed comfortable with their newly acquired soldering skills and excited to finish the project at home. Afterwards, we spent a lovely evening socializing and enjoying a chili potluck.
